A Poisoner Stalks Newport's Dogs

At least fifteen canines dead in ten days as someone laces meat with strychnine — five in a single day on the South Side.

The dog poisoner is getting in some very active work these days. At least 15 of Newport's numerous canines have bitten the dust during the past ten days, some of them valued pets. In one day the dog population of the South Side was depleted by five. Strychnine on meat is the means used to kill them.

A century before Ring doorbells and neighborhood Facebook groups, Newport's pet owners faced the same nightmare: someone deliberately killing animals and no clear way to catch them. Then as now, the story raises the question of whether cruelty to animals is a private grief or a public crime — and who is responsible for stopping it.
