Selling Stevens County to the World, One Apple at a Time
W. W. Palmer tours the Pend Oreille valley clubs to raise $5,000 for county exhibits at the National Apple Show and the Chicago Apple Show.
W. W. Palmer, of Bossburg, on the west side of the county, is this week visiting the Commercial Clubs of the Pend Oreille valley soliciting their membership in the Stevens County Federation of Commercial Clubs, and enlisting their co-operation in the work of advertising Stevens county and the exploiting of its resources. Mr. Palmer addressed a meeting of the Commercial Club of Newport Wednesday evening and secured its membership in the federation.
The federation plans an expenditure of $5,000 for the proper representation of the county at the National Apple Show, to be held at Spokane this fall, and also at the Chicago Apple Show, to be held two weeks later. Arrangements are being made to have the whole county represented. All districts are to be visited by a man in the employ of the federation, for the purpose of securing samples of fruit for exhibit. In addition literature is to be issued descriptive of all the resources of the county, which is to be distributed at both shows and also at the Dry Farming Congress to be held at Spokane in October.
Mr. Palmer left Thursday morning to visit the Commercial Clubs of Cusick, Usk and Ione, and will also stop off at the various other points along the line of the railroad to interest the ranchers.

Before Instagram and tourism boards, towns sold themselves with fruit crates, printed pamphlets and a traveling booster. Stevens County's $5,000 bet on apple shows was a calculated gamble that a good exhibit could lure settlers and capital. The same instinct — packaging a place for outside investors — drives today's rural economic development offices.
