A Woman Vanishes Toward the Cowlitz River

At Little Falls, a woman last seen walking toward the Cowlitz River has been missing since Monday, prompting search parties and fears she may have gone to the family claim or taken her life.

Little Falls, March 10. — Special. — The people of this vicinity are excited over the mysterious disappearance of the wife of a resident of this place. She has not been seen since Monday noon, when she was seen going toward the Cowlitz river. The theory is that she has either gone to their claim in the Upper Cowlitz or has taken her life in the river. Her mind was undoubtedly temporarily deranged. Search parties will immediately be sent out in search of her.

A missing-person case in a small Cowlitz River town reminds us how much search and rescue once depended on neighbors and telegraph reports. The worry about a 'temporarily deranged' mind also reflects an era before modern mental-health response, when a family crisis could become a public hunt.
