Sullivan Lake's Summer Resort Dream Hinges on Roads and the Government

A new resort permit and a push to turn old trails into wagon roads promise to bring pleasure seekers to Sullivan Lake—if federal officials do their part.

Sullivan, April 6. — A couple of men, whose names we have not learned, have obtained a permit from the government to establish and run an up-to-date summer resort at Sullivan Lake. Movements are on foot to have the wagon road finished to the lake, and to have the old trail that leads from the main road to Sullivan post office made into a good wagon road. Then pleasure seekers can be landed either at Sullivan or at Boring's landing and taken at once to the lake, where they will be cared for and catered to by the hotel there. If this arrangement will work as it is planned it will be the means of bringing many pleasure seekers to the lake and vicinity that otherwise would not come, and will also be a great benefit to the people along the line and in the immediate vicinity of Sullivan Lake. Only a small amount of labor will be required to make these few improvements, and as the labor has nearly all been donated, it is now up to the government to come forth and help the people out by doing their part and furnishing the means lacked. We hope to see this all done. The forestry department desires all settlers living in these parts to be of some service to the department in case of fire, etc. Therefore it stands to reason that the department or government should assist the settlers.

“If this arrangement will work as it is planned it will be the means of bringing many pleasure seekers to the lake and vicinity that otherwise would not come.”

Rural tourism and public-land access still depend on road money and agency cooperation in Pend Oreille County. The 1907 booster plan sounds familiar: a scenic lake, a hotel, and a community hoping the government will help finish the road.
