Newport Residents Band Together to Establish Public Library

A group of civic-minded citizens incorporates a library association, elects trustees, and seeks city hall space for a free public library.

At the second meeting of parties interested in the organization of a public library association held at the Congregational Church Monday evening some of the details of the organization were completed. Those present agreed upon and signed articles of incorporation and elected a Board of Trustees, the latter to draw up by-laws and formulate the government and plans of the association.

The Trustees elected are Mrs. W. C. Lawrence, Mrs. B. F. Seeley, Mrs. C. K. Boudwin, Messrs. A. S. Sherlock and J. H. Long. The trustees also constitute the committee on membership and after preparing the by-laws will call another meeting of the association for their adoption.

It is the hope of the Association to place before the people of Newport and vicinity the advantages of a free public library. To accomplish this it is expected to charge a nominal membership fee and ask all interested in the work to join the association. It is also anticipated that aid will be extended by the state library commission and already numerous offers of donations of valuable books have been extended by parties residing in this city. The city council may be asked to furnish the library quarters in the city hall for the present and there is no good reason why the request should not be complied with.

The Association requests and will appreciate the aid and co-operation of every citizen of this vicinity.

“It is the hope of the Association to place before the people of Newport and vicinity the advantages of a free public library.”
