Two Gun Mishaps in One Week Leave Newport Men Wounded
A hunter swapping rifles and a 10-year-old boy with a .22 both shot themselves in the foot. Both were brought to Newport for treatment.
Two Accidental Shootings During the past week there have been two cases of accidental shootings in this vicinity. Sunday afternoon, while out hunting with his brother, Jeff House, of Deer Valley, undertook to exchange guns with his brother, and while doing so a .30H Savage rifle was accidentally discharged, although the safety catch was supposed to be on, the bullet penetrating his right foot, carrying a part of the bone through the foot. His brother packed him on his shoulders for two miles and a half to a house where a team could be procured, and brought him to Newport, where Dr. Phillips dressed the wound. Alvin, 10-year-old son of J. W. Wooding, of Tiger, shot himself through the right foot Wednesday afternoon with a .22 rifle. He was brought to Newport on the train to receive medical attention.
“His brother packed him on his shoulders for two miles and a half to a house where a team could be procured, and brought him to Newport, where Dr. Phillips dressed the wound.”
Firearm accidents remain a public health concern, especially in rural areas where hunting is a way of life. The 1908 stories remind us that safety practices and medical access have always been part of the conversation around guns.
