Hillyard Votes to Ask Spokane to Take It In

The new Good Citizens' League of the railroad town of Hillyard decided at a Friday night meeting to push for annexation to Spokane, appointing a committee to draw up the resolutions.

The recently organized Good Citizens' League has started a movement for the annexation of Hillyard to Spokane. At the meeting of that organization last Friday night the matter was brought up and discussed, and it was voted as the sense of the meeting that an effort should be made to bring about this result. A committee was therefore appointed by Chairman Eames to prepare resolutions to that effect.

“It was voted as the sense of the meeting that an effort should be made to bring about this result.”

Hillyard was a Great Northern shop town that liked its independence, and the merger took years of haggling before it finally went through. Boundary questions — who pays for streets and water, who gets the tax base — still dominate Spokane's edges, from Hillyard to the continuing annexation and incorporation fights in Spokane Valley.
