The Newspaper Follows the Rails to a Brand-New Town
The Calispel Valley Times leaves its old home for Usk, a railroad town newly placed on the market, betting that business will build the valley.
The Calispel Valley Times announces that beginning this week it will issue from Usk, the new railroad town now being placed upon the market. The Times says:
"With this issue the Calispel Valley Times removes to the new town of Usk, one mile and a quarter up the river. There is nothing behind this move but business. The Times is a business enterprise and like all business ventures must bend to business laws or break. The coming of the railroad has brought the town of Usk. Both have come into Calispel Valley, not through any philanthropic motive, but simply for business. As the railroad stands ready to fight for its share of the business of the Calispel Valley, this growing country, so stands Usk. There is no disposition on the part of either to tear down. Build up! Grow! is the slogan. So it is with the Times. It will use its influence to build up every part of the valley—every town along the river."
“Build up! Grow! is the slogan.”
Railroad promotion could conjure a town almost overnight, and newspapers were often part of the sales pitch. The Calispel Valley Times' move to Usk is a reminder that local news has always followed—and sometimes hustled—the growth it covered.
