Everett's New Commercial Club
Business leaders gather to toast the rapid growth of Snohomish County.
Among the noteworthy events of the past week was the opening of the new rooms of the Everett Commercial Club on Wednesday evening in the Hall Block, on Hewitt avenue. It was in fact the inauguration of the club, which has been formed for the purpose of promoting the material interests of Snohomish county and of Everett. It starts with a membership of over 100. The rooms of the club occupy nearly the whole of the second floor, embracing a large cloak and toilet room, two fine card rooms, the library in the northeast corner, and then the parlors. Rich carpets and rugs are laid upon the floors, and the several apartments are furnished in excellent taste, without extravagance. President White congratulated the club on its new quarters and bespoke for it a strong future in the development of Everett and Snohomish county. Ex-Gov. Church spoke eloquently on what had already been achieved by the business men of Everett, and dwelt upon the fact that this club gave a better opportunity to touch elbows, get acquainted and work unitedly and harmoniously for the promotion of the general welfare.
“This club gave a better opportunity to touch elbows, get acquainted and work unitedly and harmoniously.”
The formation of commercial clubs was a hallmark of the 'booster' era in the Pacific Northwest, where local elites organized to attract capital and infrastructure. This mirrors modern-day chambers of commerce and economic development councils that continue to shape the growth and gentrification of cities like Everett.
