Spokane Wakes Up and Decides to Chase the Mines
A packed hall of businessmen forms a committee of fifteen to build a Board of Trade and a transportation company — because the future of Spokane Falls is a road to the Coeur d'Alene diggings.
We were gratified to see the large and enthusiastic crowd of representative business men present at Cannon's Hall Friday night at the call for a public meeting. The meeting was called to order by Col. G. H. Morgan, and on motion Mayor Jas. Glover was chosen chairman and M. T. Hartson, Secretary. Stirring and telling addresses were made by H. C. Hyde, Gen. T. Crane, F. R. Moore, J. T. McCarther, G. H. Morgan, E. J. Webster, Judge Bettis, J. J. Browne, Chas. Sweeney, Chas. Whiter, M. Tholpman. The gist of the talk was that Spokane Falls, from its location, ought to and could command the trade of the mines. To expedite business the following committee of fifteen was appointed to organize a Board of Trade, arrange for the establishment of a transportation company, etc.: Geo. T. Crane, Chas. Sweeney, M. Thommon, L. Ziegler, E. Neheeline, A. M. Cannon, C. N. Bunge, Jas. D. Wilson, G. H. Morgan, F. R. Moore, Judge Bettis, J. L. Blinkley, Jas. D. Roe, E. J. Webster, J. J. Browne. This committee meets at the law office of J. J. Browne this evening. Now that a move has been made let all parties lay aside all differences and unite in working for the general interests of the city. The people are awake, the time is ripe, and now or never is the moment for action. "Push" should be the watchword, and the whole people moving in concert can accomplish what otherwise could never be attained. May the movement on foot bear abundance of good fruit.
“The people are awake, the time is ripe, and now or never is the moment for action.”
Spokane's boosters understood that a city is only as big as the country it can reach — so they organized a Board of Trade before they had the roads. The same civic arithmetic still governs Spokane: the fight over the North-South Freeway, rail freight to the ports, and whether the airport lands a direct flight is the modern version of this 1883 committee of fifteen.
