College Musicians Take Seattle by Storm
Stanford and University of California students perform a sold-out concert at the Seattle Theater, complete with a bushel of roses and a bouquet of turnips.
Evidently the fame of the Stanford Mandolin Club and the University of California Glee club is growing, for there was, if anything, a larger and more enthusiastic audience at the Seattle theater last night to hear the clever young men of the two organizations than on the night of their first appearance. The upper boxes were filled with members of the two baseball teams that had played in the afternoon, and the house was gay with the colors of the Portland Athletic Club, the University of California, the Stanford University and the Seattle Athletic Club. There were flowers galore, which were most gracefully received by the deserving performers. Mr. Field's wonderful impersonation was the next thing on the programme, and the audience grew uproarious and cheered the clever artist to the echo. Nothing more amusing of its kind has been seen on the Seattle stage. The performer received something over a bushel of roses, to say nothing of a bouquet of choice Washington turnips.
“The performer received something over a bushel of roses, to say nothing of a bouquet of choice Washington turnips.”
The rivalry between West Coast universities is a long-standing tradition, and this 1895 concert shows that the 'Big Game' spirit—and the accompanying pageantry—was alive and well in Seattle over a century ago.
