Tacoma Moves to Fill Its Tide Flats

The Tacoma Land Company prepares to reclaim the mudflats under the state's tide-land law, with a Philadelphia backer footing the bill.

Tacoma, June 26.—Tacoma, in all probability, will soon begin to fill in her tide flats. The Tacoma Land Company has for several days been endeavoring to secure money in the East to fill in these flats under the same law that the Oregon Car Company is proceeding under. To that end a private letter from Philadelphia brings the news that the money has been secured for the work, and that the work of filling the flats will begin before the first of July.

“Tacoma, in all probability, will soon begin to fill in her tide flats.”

Tacoma's tide-flat reclamation turned shallow water into the industrial and port land that still underlies much of the city's waterfront — a reminder that a great deal of 'real estate' on Puget Sound is engineered ground. The same questions of who owns the tidelands and who profits from filling them remain live in waterfront development fights today.
