A Mind That Failed, a Family Left Behind
A Penrith farmer died at the state asylum at Medical Lake, leaving a wife and three children — and neighbors who came to bury him.
Jos. Beuchel, whose home was west of Penrith, died at the Medical Lake Insane Hospital and was brought to Newport for burial. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church Tuesday morning, a priest from Gonzaga College officiating. Mr. Beuchel had been a resident of this section about eight years and was 38 years old. He leaves a wife and three children. Last March his mind failed and he was taken to Medical Lake, where his death resulted from lumbar pneumonia. A number of neighbors and friends from the vicinity of Penrith were in attendance on the funeral.
“Last March his mind failed and he was taken to Medical Lake”
In 1910 a mental breakdown meant removal to a distant state asylum, often with little family contact and a burial far from home. The Beuchel story is a reminder of how thin the safety net was — and how neighbors filled the gap when institutions did not.
