The Navy Eyes the Sound

Federal commissioners officially name Port Orchard as the superior site for a major naval base in the Pacific Northwest.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25.—The naval commission appointed to select a site for a navy yard on the Pacific coast north of the 42nd parallel, today formally reported to the secretary of the navy that in its judgment, Puget Sound was the best locality in the entire region. Port Orchard holds advantages over all other situations, and the particular site should be sought behind Bainbridge Island.

“Port Orchard holds advantages over all other situations.”

The selection of Port Orchard eventually became the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Today, the facility remains a cornerstone of the Kitsap Peninsula economy and a defining feature of the region's relationship with the U.S. military.
