The Pillowcase Vault: A Tacoma Man’s $180 Vanishes Into the Laundry

E.M. Carter hid his savings under a pillow at the Donnelly Hotel, only to leave it behind when he checked out. Thanks to a sharp-eyed police chief and a laundry room search, the money was saved from boiling soapsuds.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

In order to make his money secure, E.M. Carter, who occupied a room at the Donnelly hotel Monday night, placed an envelope containing $180 inside the pillow slip on his bed, then threw himself down for a good night's sleep. On arising yesterday morning, however, he forgot about the newly devised safe deposit vault and left the hotel without taking the money with him.

Yesterday forenoon he purchased a ticket for San Francisco and had gone as far as Wollochet, Wash., when it occurred to him that his much treasured gold lay hidden in the pillowslip at the Donnelly. He immediately communicated with the police here and Chief Fackler went to the Donnelly to see if it had been found. With the assistance of Mr. Donnelly, the room was searched, but no envelope containing money was found. The chambermaid had changed the bed clothing and the chief, with his associates, next searched the bundle awaiting the laundryman. Here was the money, which would soon have been in boiling soapsuds.

Mr. Carter, after informing the police of the cure, took the next train back to Tacoma. He was given his money, and took the evening train for the southern city last night.

This story captures a moment before digital banking or secure hotel safes were standard, where travelers relied on makeshift 'vaults' like pillowcases. It mirrors modern anxieties about financial security and the vulnerability of personal assets when traveling, though today’s risks are cyber-theft rather than laundry detergent.
