The Shortage Scandal: County Officials Missing Funds

A wave of missing funds across Washington Territory has exposed several deputies and treasurers as they slip away, leaving empty accounts in their wake.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

This seems to be the day of shortages among county officials. Within a month four cases have been reported. With the Treasurer of Thurston county was a little matter of three thousand dollars short in his settlement, and with the treasurer of Klickitat eighteen hundred dollars short. Word comes that a deputy in Thurston county has slipped off, leaving his principal to pay a few thousands stolen or squandered by the deputy. The Treasurer of Klickitat county has been detected in fraudulent allegiances and has to return to the county to the extent of about eight hundred dollars. It is to be hoped this state of official misdeeds has had its run.

“This seems to be the day of shortages among county officials.”
