While this 1903 report is brief, it captures the intense civic rivalry between Seattle and Tacoma that defined early 20th-century Washington. Today, while the cities are part of a unified metro area, high school sports rivalries remain a potent source of local pride and community identity, echoing the same competitive spirit seen in this muddy track meet.
