Seattle High School Defeats Tacoma on the Gridiron

A single touchdown settles a gritty, hard-fought contest between two nascent local high school football teams.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The football team representing the Seattle High School invaded Tacoma yesterday to do battle with the high school team there and brought back the laurels of a well-earned victory. A single touchdown in the first half was responsible for the result, it being the only score of the game. Seattle won the game on its merits, as it exhibited stronger team work all through. In individual play Kelly showed to the best advantage, making most of the gains. Nichols made big holes in the Tacoma rush line and Inglis tackled extremely well. For Tacoma, Sturtevant played practically the whole game, making most of the gains. Seattle pushed the ball steadily down the field from the center by a succession of vigorous center plays until they had the ball within three feet of Tacoma's goal line. The score ended Seattle 4, Tacoma 0.

“Seattle won the game on its merits, as it exhibited stronger team work all through.”

High school sports rivalries between Seattle and Tacoma remain a fixture of Washington civic life today. While the game was won by a single touchdown, it captured the era's competitive spirit in a region just beginning to formalize its athletic institutions.
