Everett Labor Council Takes Stand Against Elks Lodge

Local unions clash with the fraternal organization over the hiring of an 'unfair contractor' for their new building project.

The Everett Trades Council met in regular session Wednesday evening. A communication was received from the Building Trades Council stating they had protested in emphatic language to the local lodge of Elks for their action in letting the contract for constructing their new building to an unfair contractor. The council secretary was instructed to write to the Elks' lodge protesting in the name of the Trades Council against this action.

“Protested in emphatic language to the local lodge of Elks for their action in letting the contract for constructing their new building to an unfair contractor.”

This dispute highlights a long-standing tension in Everett between organized labor and local institutions. Just as labor unions in 1909 sought to dictate labor standards for civic construction, local building trades remain highly active today in monitoring city-wide construction projects.
