The Japanese Gambler Who Broke the Bank
A local Japanese patron at the Warwick gambling hall caused a scene when his unlikely win forced the house to suspend operations.
One of the roulette wheels at the Warwick was put out of business by a Japanese man last night in much the same way that his countrymen are doing things to the Russians. Among the crowd who had been bucking the tiger all evening was an ordinary appearing Japanese man. He staked various small amounts on the game and through some hocus pocus managed to keep about even. Toward the finish he became reckless and finally threw his entire pile, $14, on the 00 on a 33 to 1 shot. Just about that time something must have happened to the wheel for it stopped at the right place to turn up the man's hazard and it was up to the house to hand him $462. A wild look came over the face of the dealer as he glanced at the wheel and then at the man who looked mildly on and waited for his money. Finally the truth seemed to dawn on the dealer and with an imprecation he began to dig up the gold. He passed it over to the man, saying, 'Take it you slant eyed son of a gun and get out of here.' Ordinarily a man might resent being called a 'son of a gun' and 'slant eyed,' but this time the little brown man overlooked the insult and smiled blandly as he walked away with his pockets bulging with the night's profits of the house. This onslaught broke up the game and the wheel was stopped until John Malone could rustle the cash to replenish the bank. The wheel will be in operation tonight but no Japanese will be allowed to play.
“Take it you slant eyed son of a gun and get out of here.”
This account captures the casual, systemic racism of turn-of-the-century Tacoma, where a successful minority gambler was both insulted and summarily banned from a public business. It reflects the intense exclusionary atmosphere that preceded the formal anti-Asian agitation movements in the region.
