Slapped Down on the Diamond
Tacoma’s baseball team drops to fourth place after a bruising 12-6 loss to the Seattle Siwashes.
It took five pitchers to conduct the slugging tournament held on the Eleventh street grounds yesterday. Incidentally, the Tigers were slugged off the diamond, the score after nine innings standing 12 to 6. But, worst of all, the winning of that game put the Seattle tribe at the top of the ladder and dragged the erstwhile leaders down to the fourth rung. The Tigers made their ascension early yesterday. Thomas, who entered the box first for Fisher, engineered a little deal in the second chapter whereby the enemy netted six big runs. Right here Mr. T. Thomas was called home, and Fitzgerald was sent to the front. While Fisher was having all this trouble over the battery question, Barber, for Seattle, was pitching shut-out ball, until the fifth, when a 'sizzer' connected with his jaw. Then Frank went out of commission. At this stage the nines awoke. 'Truck' Eagan cinched up his belt, and three Tigers had scampered around the circuit before Williams, who took Barber's place, got Kirk safely to terra firma. It was a slugging match and Seattle won because of her ability to connect with Fisher's twirlers.
“There was weeping and wailing in local fandom. Barrels of big, unity, crocodile tears were shed and the main squeezes donned sackcloth and ashes and buried themselves in the ash heap.”
The 'Eleventh Street Grounds' served as the heart of early Tacoma's civic sports culture. Today, the location remains a hub for downtown transit and commerce, a world away from the rowdy baseball culture that once defined local weekends.
