Point Defiance Commuters Stranded by Transit Switch

The Tacoma Railway & Power Company cancels late-night park cars without warning, leaving riders to hoof it home from the smelter.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

With its usual consideration for the convenience of the public, the T. R. P. company changed the schedule on the Point Defiance car line and gave but little, if any, notice of the change. Until Tuesday night, the last car had been leaving the park at 8:30. After that time, the cars ran only as far as the smelter. Beginning Tuesday, the 9:15 car to the park was taken off. People who did not know of the change have been waiting for the 9:30 car until about 10 o'clock, when the light would dawn upon them that the only way to reach home was to walk to the smelter. It is thought that by the end of next week the news of the change in schedule will have become generally known without the T. R. P. company being put to the trouble of posting sufficient notices.

“People who did not know of the change have been waiting for the 9:30 car until about 10 o'clock, when the light would dawn upon them that the only way to reach home was to walk to the smelter.”

Public transit service cuts and lack of communication remain a sore point for Tacoma commuters today. The reliance on the streetcar line to Point Defiance mirrors modern anxieties about connectivity between Tacoma's neighborhoods and its recreational crown jewel.
