The Commuter’s Chill: East Side Transit Grievance

McKinley Park residents protest streetcar service cuts that leave riders waiting in the night air.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Residents of the East side are circulating a petition for presentation to the city council, asking that body to insist on the street railway company running the McKinley park cars through to the wharf after 7 p.m. As the matter stands now, it is claimed that cars only run between the park and Puyallup avenue after 7 p.m., and passengers coming down town are forced to transfer and often stand outside in the cold while they wait for a car.

“passengers coming down town are forced to transfer and often stand outside in the cold while they wait for a car.”

Transit reliability remains a central civic tension in Tacoma. Just as East Side residents organized in 1904 to demand direct service to the waterfront, current debates over Pierce Transit headways and connections continue to determine who has access to the city’s economic hubs.
