Whitman College Trustees Purchase 20 Acres, Elect Faculty

The college acquires the Baker estate, adding 20 acres to the campus as trustees announce a new slate of faculty members.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

At a meeting of the trustees of Whitman College yesterday afternoon, H. Reynolds and W. H. Cowles of Spokane, whose terms had expired, were reelected. The purchase of the D. S. Baker place for additional college grounds was announced and members of the faculty for the coming school year were elected. The purchase of the D. S. Baker property gives the college 20 acres on the north side of Boyer Avenue, valuable for all purposes for many years. The Baker property will be vacated on January 1 of next year. In the selection of faculty members, Prof. A. W. Hendrick will have charge of the English department, made vacant by the resignation of Prof. Otto Hauerbach.

Whitman College remains the institutional anchor of Walla Walla's cultural and physical landscape. The 1903 acquisition of the Baker property is a reminder of the long-term land-banking strategies that colleges use to shape the urban geography of their host cities.
