A Treacherous Winter Morning on Main Street

An elderly local man is hospitalized with a concussion after slipping on the icy downtown pavement.

William Crye, an aged wheelwright, is at the Walla Walla hospital suffering from a concussion and other injuries, the result of a bad fall on the city pavement in front of the Hotel State on Main Street this morning. Mr. Crye, like other pedestrians along the street, was making his way cautiously across the glassy pavement when his feet flew from beneath him and he fell heavily to the walk, his head striking with heavy force. The shock rendered him unconscious, and passersby who witnessed the accident placed him in a hack and sent him to the hospital. In addition to a concussion, he suffered a severe cut over the eye and bruises about the body. The thin coating of ice that greeted Walla Wallans this morning was the cause of many mishaps, although Mr. Crye was the only one to suffer disability.

“The thin coating of ice which greeted Walla Wallans this morning when they ventured out was the cause of many a mishap.”

While municipal maintenance has evolved, the sudden arrival of winter ice remains a recurring hazard for Walla Walla's pedestrian-heavy downtown, where historic architecture meets modern foot traffic. The incident highlights the perennial civic responsibility of sidewalk safety in a town that still experiences significant seasonal freezes.
