Tragic Snow-Clearing Death

A 71-year-old man died instantly after slipping on icy pavement while clearing snow in North Tacoma.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

W. G. Young, 71, slipped on the icy pavement and fell while sweeping snow from the sidewalk in front of his brother's home at North 14th and Prospect streets early this morning. He died almost instantly. The death is attributed to heart failure, superinduced by the shock of the fall. Mr. Young was a native of Pennsylvania who had resided in Western Washington for six years, previously conducting a store in Des Moines, Washington.

“The old man shouted feebly as he fell, and his brothers rushed to his side, to find that he had expired.”

A reminder of the dangers of winter weather in a city built on steep hills. While the infrastructure has changed, the hazardous nature of Tacoma's streets during a freeze remains a recurring civic challenge.
