A River Mystery at Melbourne

A sunken boat and discarded bottles leave locals fearing for the lives of a party of revelers.

A large sized fishing boat was found sunk in the river near Melbourne on Thursday. On emptying the boat of water, a man's hat and several bottles were discovered. Parties in Wynoochie saw a boat load of drunken Indians pass down the river the evening before and it is thought they capsized their craft and were drowned.

“On emptying the boat of water a man's hat and several bottles were discovered.”

Melbourne, once a significant river settlement, is today largely a ghost of its former self, yet the Chehalis River remains a central artery for the region. The tragedy hinted at here highlights the dangers of river travel that defined life in Grays Harbor before modern roads and bridges made the waterways safer.
