The Peeping Toms of H and Second Streets

A string of late-night window-peeping incidents has left Aberdeen residents on edge and arming themselves for a confrontation.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The people living in the vicinity of H and Second streets have been in a great state of excitement for the last week over the mysterious visitations of unknown men to their houses during the night. One evening last week Mrs. A. F. Stevens was greatly alarmed about 9 o'clock to see a red-headed, cross-eyed man peering through the window at her. She gave the alarm but the miscreant escaped. Monday night about 11 o'clock a man attempted to crawl through an open window in a bedroom of the residence of F. H. Owen. Mrs. Owen, having retired, screamed at sight of the intruder, bringing her husband, who was in the next room, on the scene, but the unwelcome visitor had fled. George D. Allen, who had been watching several nights for the nocturnal prowlers, saw a couple of men run between the houses, but before he and his little cannon could get out of doors the parties had made good their escape. A number of citizens have been annoyed by people peeping into their windows at night, and have decided to make it very tropical for anyone caught in the act.

Fear of neighborhood intruders remains a constant in Aberdeen, though the 'little cannons' George D. Allen used to guard his property have since been replaced by modern home security systems and neighborhood social media groups.
