The Price of a Boom-Time Hangover

Aberdeen’s municipal coffers were drained by the reckless speculation of 1890, leaving the city scrambling to consolidate massive debt.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The financial condition of the city is the most serious and momentous question for solution now before the people of Aberdeen. The people are now suffering from the effects of the reckless management of municipal affairs and the prodigal and careless manner in which affairs were conducted during the boom times of 1890. Nearly every city in the Northwest has passed through a like experience, and, like them, Aberdeen will have to 'face the music,' and take steps to at once place herself on a sound financial footing. The bonded indebtedness of the city is $65,000 for waterworks, and there are outstanding warrants on the general fund to the amount of $30,718.05. It has been proposed that the city issue bonds to the amount of $30,000, redeemable in twenty years, to help clear the floating debt and save on interest payments.

“The day of speculative bubbles has passed and the sooner the people cast aside their inflated ideas on this subject the better it will be for all concerned.”

Aberdeen has a long history of grappling with the 'boom and bust' cycles inherent to a timber-based economy. This 1892 fiscal crisis reflects the city's recurring struggle to manage infrastructure debt after periods of hyper-growth.
