City Faces Financial Collapse After Failed 'Boom' Schemes

Aberdeen’s city council orders lawsuits against property owners who failed to pay for the ambitious boulevard projects that left the town in debt.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The action of the council in ordering the city attorney to bring suit for the collection of all delinquent city taxes must meet with the approval of those who have the city’s welfare at heart. For more than a year, such action has been held in abeyance because of the popular cry that enforced collection would be a hardship to many of the citizens, and the matter was allowed to slide along until the city is placed in a deplorable financial condition and heroic measures made necessary to maintain its corporate existence. During the past week, every conceivable plan has been suggested by the wiseacres to get the city out of the pit some of them digged for it by their wild cat street improvement schemes. It is charged, with good reason, too, that many of the people who engineered the building of great wide boulevards through their property are principally the ones who have not paid for their improvements. They will now have an opportunity of defending themselves in court for their liberal squandering of the people’s money.

“During the past week, every conceivable plan has been suggested by the wiseacres to get the city out of the pit some of them digged for it.”

Aberdeen’s 1892 financial crisis, sparked by speculative infrastructure 'boom' projects that the city could not actually afford, mirrors the recurring tension in Pacific Northwest history between rapid growth and sustainable municipal finance.
