Moving Day for an Entire Town

As residents of White Bluffs relocate to a new townsite, historical buildings are being literally pulled across the landscape to find new footing.

The skids have been put under the Maltbie house and on Thursday morning it started on its journey to the new town. The house movers expect to locate it out there in about six days. They expect to take the Boag hotel out next. Plans are under way for the building of a modern, up-to-date garage at the new town. The building will be located facing the depot just back of where the Boag hotel will be situated when it is moved out. Ired Gilhuly will have charge.

“The skids have been put under the Maltbie house and on Thursday morning it started on its journey to the new town.”

The practice of physically moving structures was common during the early 20th-century development of the Columbia Basin. Today, these buildings are long gone, lost to the expansion of the Hanford site and the eventual flooding or demolition associated with the region's mid-century transformations.
