Voters Settle Scores at the Polls

Detailed primary results from White Bluffs and Hanford reveal a community restless with local incumbents.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The complete unofficial returns of the primary election Tuesday show the following republican candidates nominated: Henry McBride, governor; Miles Poindexter, U. S. Senator; Wm. LaFollette, congressman; Louis F. Hart, Lieutenant-governor; I. M. Howell, Sec’y of State; C. W. Clausen, Auditor; W. W. Sherman, Treasurer; Josephine Preston, State Superintendent of Schools; H. O. Fishback, Insurance Commissioner. Clark Savidge for State Land commissioner and W. V. Tanner for Attorney General had no opposition. The voters apparently did not take kindly to W. S. Jenkins’ platform of running the clerk’s office on half fare and they re-elected Delle by a substantial majority. T. J. Wright seems to have developed a large crop of political and other kind of enemies in the engineer’s office and they told him all about it last Tuesday. County Superintendent A. C. Jones’ boat went on the rocks because, while a good school man, he seemed unable to distinguish the difference between public duty and politics.

Local primary elections continue to be the primary battleground where incumbents are held accountable for perceived administrative failures. The blunt critique of Superintendent A.C. Jones shows that political patronage and the blurring of public/private duty are age-old frustrations for rural voters.
