Tacoma failed to get a single place in the championship wrestling tournament of the Northwest held at the Y.M.C.A. last night. Seattle won three out of five of the honors, and Everett and Vancouver each took one. Luck seemed against Tacoma. Harry Talbot, touted to win the 145-pound class, was disposed of by McDonald of Seattle in a flying fall, and Clinton Jones of Tacoma was put out by a dislocated elbow. The results of the match were as follows: 115-pound class preliminaries: Chapman, Vancouver, threw Sharpe, Tacoma, in 1:33; Donaldson, Seattle, threw Brown, Tacoma, in :27. Finals: Donaldson threw Chapman in 5:52. 123-pound class: Sallfers, Seattle, threw Jones, Tacoma, in 8:17. 135-pound class preliminaries: Scrondall, Everett, won from Huber, Seattle, in 9 minutes. Finals: Scrondall, Everett, threw Lita, Tacoma, in 2:55. 145-pound class: McDonald, Seattle, threw Talbot, Tacoma, in 5:05; McDonald threw Wray, Seattle, in 8:40. 158-pound class preliminaries: Burke, Vancouver, threw Seagrave, Seattle, in :38; Lindgren, Seattle, threw Mahncke, Tacoma, in 5:55; Kennedy, Tacoma, threw Darman, Everett, in 2:13. Semifinals: Kennedy won decision from Lindgren in 6 minutes; Burke drew bye. Finals: Burke threw Kennedy in 2:45.
“Luck seemed against Tacoma.”
Local pride in amateur sports remains a staple of Tacoma civic life, though the YMCA tournament format has largely been replaced by high school and collegiate regional athletics.
