City Council moves to connect Center Street
A new infrastructure project aims to link the west end and South Tacoma with a low-grade route.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Center street is to be connected up with Jefferson avenue at once and a new street with a low grade given to South Tacoma and all the south and west ends of the city. Councilman Stambaugh last night introduced a resolution, which was adopted, instructing the city attorney to proceed to condemn such land as is necessary to open up the street. The resolution declared the Union Pacific is now ready to turn over to the city the right of way on the ground it has secured, which constitutes the larger portion of the street required.
“A new street with low grade given to South Tacoma and all the south and west ends of the city.”
The expansion of Center Street and its connection to the city's infrastructure grid reflects Tacoma's early 20th-century obsession with 'booster' growth, a legacy still felt in today's debates over urban density and street-level connectivity.
