Major Overhaul for Yakima Avenue

Tacoma moves to improve city infrastructure by paving, realigning, and condemning property along the thoroughfare.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Yakima avenue is to be paved through from Division to Center street, according to the decision of the streets and alleys committee of the council this afternoon. A number of property owners appeared before the committee and asked that the matter be taken up at once. John S. Baker will replat his addition at the lower end of the street adjoining the gulch, and the street will be straightened out. The city will also condemn some property to provide for the improvement; there will be a large cut where Yakima and Jefferson avenues cross.

Yakima Avenue remains one of Tacoma's primary corridors, but today's debates about urban streetscapes often focus on bike lanes and transit rather than just paving and property condemnation. The mention of the 'gulch' points to the dramatic topography of the city that historically shaped its street layout.
