The Gift of an Elegant Era

Tacoma club women receive a historic windfall as the W.R. Rust family donates the entire contents of their mansion for a new clubhouse.

Club women who are interested in purchasing the Rust residence, on North 10th and I streets, for a clubhouse, received a pleasant surprise yesterday when Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Rust announced that they would add the entire furnishings of the elegant home, valued at $15,000, free of charge. Among the furnishings of the home are a number of expensive rugs and several valuable paintings.

The Rust residence remains a prominent landmark in Tacoma’s Stadium District, though its role as a club space reflects a time when civic organizations were pillars of local social life. Today, the preservation of such historic homes involves a complex tug-of-war between private ownership, commercial development, and heritage status.
