The Town and the Team

Oroville celebrates a victory on the diamond, even if the play was a bit 'scaley.'

Upon the arrival of the Keremeos ball team Saturday evening a seven-inning game was played, resulting in a score of 7 to 2 in favor of Oroville. It was a pretty scaley exhibition of ball playing, but was classy in comparison with what was doing the following day. One thing is certain: the people of this place turn out strong to a ball game and give the local nine a hearty support. A wee mite of a boy was struck in the side with a batted ball Saturday afternoon, and for a time it was feared that he was severely hurt. After a time he was able to walk home. The firing line is a dangerous position for youngsters.

Community sports remain the beating heart of small-town Washington. While safety standards for 'wee mites' on the field have drastically improved, the intense town pride in a local baseball victory remains a constant fixture of life in the Okanogan Valley.
