The Shoemaker's Retribution
A downtown confrontation erupts after a local businessman catches a thief red-handed.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
Last night about six o'clock, quite a crowd of men were aggregated at the corner of Fourteenth and Harris streets, having been attracted there by a fight. It seems that a shoemaker, while at work, noticed a sneak thief take a pair of shoes from his place of business and immediately started in pursuit of the offender. At the corner he caught him and at once demanded his shoes, which the man very sullenly surrendered. He had no sooner given them to the rightful owner than the latter commenced to get even by striking the man in the face. In a minute, the two were at it as hard as possible, and cheered on by the crowd, the shoemaker made a hard fight and the face of his antagonist showed the effects of the effort. The thief was badly used up when the shoemaker got through with him, and he was sore in more than one way as he quietly sneaked off down the railroad track toward Sehome. The victor said after the trouble was over that he proposed to take no chances in a matter of that kind and would personally superintend the punishment of any man he caught stealing his goods.

Public street violence over petty theft reflects the lack of formal policing infrastructure in the rapid, lawless expansion of 1890s Fairhaven. Today, Fairhaven is a manicured historic district, but the tension between private property and the vulnerable population remains a recurring civic dialogue.
