Holiday Tragedy on the Road

A Memorial Day outing turns to terror when a runaway team leaves a mother injured in a wire fence collision.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

While returning from the memorial exercises at Sprague last Monday, John Sirginson's team became frightened and ran into the hack of Mr. Womach, partially upsetting Sirginson's hack and throwing him out, leaving his wife and two children in the vehicle. The team continued to run, eventually throwing Mrs. Sirginson against a wire fence and badly cutting her leg. The children fortunately escaped with only slight bruises.

“They continued to run and finally threw Mrs. Sirginson against a wire fence badly cutting her leg.”

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils of horse-drawn travel in the early days of Adams County. Today's traffic safety concerns have shifted from runaway teams to automobile collisions, but the vulnerability of families on the road remains a constant civic concern.
