The Freight Line Proposal

A local entrepreneur hopes to bypass expensive rail rates with a new six-horse team freight route.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

John Welty of Meyers Falls was in Colville last week and part of his time investigating the feasibility of starting a freight line between his town and Spokane. The present first-class rate between these points is $1.08. A six-horse team can haul 9,000 pounds each way in six days for $1 or less a hundred, and this would not only give the sections between Meyers Falls, Colville and Spokane a lower freight rate, but would afford a greater convenience in many ways, open up a home industry, and leave more of our money in the county. Such a proposition is worthy of investigation by the merchants of this county, by the farmers and by the fruitgrowers.

This reflects the recurring tension between regional producers and external transit monopolies, a struggle still felt by agricultural communities today dealing with logistics and supply chain costs.
