A Violent Dispute Over Laundry

A domestic disagreement over washing services in the Pacific Northwest escalates into a targeted racial assault, exposing the local climate of 'Black Republican' tension.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The North-west of the 19th contains a detailed account of an attempt to murder a colored man by the name of Bowen, by one H. L. Sutton. The difficulty grew out of a dispute between Bowen's wife and Sutton about a bill for washing, due the former. Sutton pitched Mrs. B. 'into the open air,' hence a suit, which resulted in a fine of the defendant in the moderate sum of five dollars. The defendant, strange to relate, didn't approve of the decision of the Justice, and amused himself in denouncing it as a d—d black Republican affair, and in order to determine the effectiveness of black Republican justice still further, he playfully made a target of the colored man's head. The colored man couldn't see the point of the joke, and Sutton was again arrested. Defendant didn't have the nerve to await the issue of the matter, and at the first opportunity effected his escape.

“Sutton was again arrested. Defendant didn't have the nerve to await the issue of the matter, and at the first opportunity effected his escape.”

This incident serves as a stark artifact of the anti-Black sentiment in the Washington Territory during the Civil War era. It illustrates how personal domestic disputes were often sites of racialized violence and how local justice systems struggled (or refused) to address such hate crimes.
