Legislators Behaving Badly
Lawmakers attending a local performance in Olympia disrupt the show, casting doubt on their suitability for office.
The story, cleaned up
A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.
A lot of the members of the legislature attended the performance of the Geiger-Gage troupe at Olympia the other night and made great buffoons of themselves. They acted like rowdy children, throwing spit balls, overshoes and oranges, and guying the actors. The balance of the audience was disgusted, as were the constituents of these merry Andrews. The open charges of incompetence, bribery and heavy gambling should be enough without the violation of the first principles of decency. March 28th is certainly not too soon for the adjournment of this legislature.
“They acted like rowdy children, throwing spit balls, overshoes and oranges, and guying the actors.”
Legislative conduct and accusations of corruption continue to spark public outrage, highlighting the perennial gap between those who govern and the public they serve.
