A Foul Nuisance in the Indian Addition

A rotting horse carcass left in the street sparks an urgent health complaint from a neighborhood near 34th and V.

The residents of the Indian addition have complained to the county commissioners that some one brought the carcass of a horse to the corner of South Thirty-fourth and V streets and there left it to putrefy. The stench from the decaying carcass is almost unbearable by those who live within a stone's throw of the place, and they insist upon something being done with the remains. The matter has been referred to the city officials and they have promised to shortly conduct the obsequies. Meanwhile there is a demand for rose water and cologne in the addition.

“Meanwhile there is a demand for rose water and cologne in the addition.”

Long before contemporary sanitation protocols, neighborhood complaints regarding public health and waste disposal were handled via direct appeals to city hall—often with local color, as this humorous account of 'rose water' demand attests.
