The Twelfth Street Improvement Battle

A local improvement club pushes to pave Twelfth Street and demands the streetcar company upgrade their tracks or move them.

The Twelfth Street Improvement club last night emphatically endorsed the project for paving Twelfth street west to Proctor. When this is done the people will also insist on the T. R. P. either double tracking or putting its tracks in the center of the street. The company has been declaring it would build a double track, but if it does not the people intend to force the tracks into the middle of the street so other lines can be put outside if desired.

“The company has been declaring it would build a double track, but if it does not the people intend to force the tracks into the middle of the street.”

Transit and street-paving conflicts were the bread-and-butter of 20th-century neighborhood organizing in Tacoma. The struggle to hold rail companies accountable for road quality and utility is an echo of the modern transit-oriented development debates in Proctor and beyond.
