West End Residents Demand New School

The Twelfth Street Improvement Club campaigns for a replacement for the 'inadequate' Franklin building.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The West End will try to get a new school house to take the place of the old Franklin building now in use. Such was the decision reached after a lengthy meeting in Klang's hall last night by the members of the Twelfth Street Improvement club. Seventy-five persons were in attendance and it was unanimously voted that the Franklin school is inadequate in every particular. The president of the club named a committee to confer with the board of education. If a new building cannot be obtained the club desires that improvements be made to the present one, and an addition be erected. The council will be asked to change the name of 'Hoodlum' lake to 'Franklin' lake.

“Seventy-five persons were in attendance and it was unanimously voted that the Franklin school is inadequate in every particular.”

Neighborhood improvement clubs have served as the grassroots engines of Tacoma's civic life for generations. Their focus on school facilities remains as central to the city's growth today as it was in 1909.
