The Passing of a Wishkah River Pioneer

A local settler who carved a life out of the river valley dies at sixty.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

Michael Fogarty died Tuesday, July 31, at his residence, aged 60 years, of acute Bright's disease. Michael Fogarty was an old settler, locating on the Wishkah river, eight miles above Aberdeen, about twelve years ago. He was well and favorably known as a man of sterling worth; he leaves a wife and family of sons and daughters, Daniel, John, Edward, James and Louis, Mrs. Clarence Ackey, Mrs. Geo. Adams, Mrs. C. W. Blackwell and Miss Nellie. He was buried yesterday, the Rev. A. H. Lackey conducting the services.

“He was well and favorably known as a man of sterling worth.”

Obituaries from this era provide a vital map of the early families who settled the Wishkah Valley. Many of these names still resonate in the regional history of Grays Harbor.
