Tacoma's First Symphony Orchestra Prepares to Debut

Local musicians have officially organized a symphony orchestra, aiming to bring high culture to the Masonic Temple stage.

After several months of preparatory organization, Tacoma musicians announced yesterday that they have formed a symphony orchestra which, it is claimed, will be a pride to the city. The initial appearance of the orchestra will be in a concert to be given at the Masonic Temple Tuesday evening, March 30. Olaf Bull has been unanimously chosen leader. His wide experience in orchestral work fits him admirably to conduct the new enterprise.

The founding of a symphony orchestra served as a quintessential 'boom' era marker of civic maturity, aiming to elevate Tacoma's reputation beyond its industrial roots. The Masonic Temple remains a significant site in Tacoma, though its use and the city's cultural landscape have shifted dramatically since 1909.
