The Battle of the West End

Neighbors in Tacoma's West End are calling for city intervention after a wave of poisonings fails to curb the local dog population.

The story, cleaned up

A cleaned-up reading of the newspaper page: spelling and layout repaired, one story lifted off a crowded page. It follows the original closely but it is not a transcription. The original page is below; read it if a detail matters.

The West End is aroused over the dog question. That part of town is more than well supplied with canines. So great is the nuisance that some citizens have taken the law in their own hands, and in the last year more than a score of valuable canines have been poisoned. The dog crop, however, is not lessened materially, and now official action is demanded. The Twelfth Street Improvement Club last night voted to demand that the city council pass an ordinance prohibiting dogs from running at large. It was also asked that the dog license be raised. Some want the license for all dogs placed at least at $5 a head.

“So great is the nuisance that some citizens have taken the law in their own hands.”
