Newport Bets $12,000 on a Concrete Hotel — and a Street of New Homes
A three-story, thirty-room hotel at Washington and Second leads a summer building rush that will remake several Newport blocks.
Newport is to have another hotel. James Martin has purchased of Samuel Grover the lot at the southwest corner of Washington Avenue and Second Street, paying $2,000 for the same. Mr. Martin and Charles F. Craig, of the First National Bank, will erect a modern structure on the site this season. The building will be three stories high and will contain thirty rooms, all of which will be steam heated and supplied with all modern conveniences. The building will be constructed of cement blocks and will cost about $12,000.
While the plans for the new structure have not been drawn, the gentlemen have about decided on the general plan for the building. There has been a demand for increased hotel facilities in Newport for some time. Experienced hotel men from outside have made overtures to local capitalists for the construction of a hotel building of considerably larger proportions than the proposed building, but the site desired could not be secured. The parties offered to take a long lease on the property, but the deal could not be consummated.
Lehmkuhl & Lutz have obtained the contract for building a new residence for W. C. Lawrence, of the Security State Bank, at the corner of Third Street and Warren Avenue. It will cost about $3,500. Mr. Lawrence will also erect two other residences on the same corner this season.
Albert E. Reid will begin the construction of a $2,500 residence on his property, just north of the residence of Charles F. Craig, on Spokane Avenue, early in August.
George Torreson, of the Fidelity Lumber Co., has had plans prepared for the construction of a dwelling to cost about $3,000. The house will be constructed this season on the site occupied by the Earl home.
The residence of F. C. Krause, of the Security State Bank, located on Fourth Street and Cass Avenue, has been framed. It will cost about $4,000.
Thomas Olsen, of Spokane, is having three cottages erected for renting purposes on the property at the corner of Pine Street and Union Avenue. Fred Kirkland is doing the carpenter work.
E. K. Reid has sold his residence at the corner of Third Street and Warren Avenue to G. A. Lawrence, father of W. C. Lawrence, for $1,600. Mr. Reid will immediately begin the erection of a new house on his property, near the residence of Charles F. Craig. Mr. Lawrence will take possession of his property about October 1.
Arthur Millard has let the contract for a $3,000 residence to be erected on his property on Scott Avenue between First and Second Streets to Jones & Son. Ground will be broken this week.
“There has been a demand for increased hotel facilities in Newport for some time.”
Newport's 1908 building boom was sparked by railroad traffic and the hope of more hotel beds; today the same arguments about visitor capacity, housing supply and downtown investment still shape small-town growth. The named corners are a reminder that most of "new Newport" was once someone's speculative lot.
