The story, cleaned up

WASHINGTON, Oct 20 — Acting Secretary Muldrow of the Interior Department has refused the application of H. J. Snively of Yakima, W.T., as attorney for E. A. Moorehouse, for permission to use the name of the United States in proceedings to dispossess O. S. Carrie of certain land in Kittitas county, Washington Territory, which is the alleged property of said Moorehouse. Mr. Muldrow also rendered a decision affecting certain lands in the Walla Walla district, which had been withdrawn for the benefit of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company. The decision varies them to settlement and entry. The lands referred to are found to be south of the territory affected by the definite location and east of the line of the forty mile limit at that part of the road not definitely located.
“The lands referred to are found to be south of the territory affected by the definite location.”
This reflects the volatile landscape of the late 19th-century West, where land ownership was often in flux due to competing railroad subsidies and local homestead claims. Today's property law in Kittitas County continues to grapple with the legacy of these federal land grants and territorial-era surveys.
